Burning text, photographs, or other images onto a fireproof, waterproof, timeproof medium is now a reality. Arnano, a Léti-MINATEC spinoff founded this year, has invented a robust, inalterable, forgery-proof microscopic synthetic sapphire engraving process with these impressive capabilities.

Arnano is targeting the luxury market, and for good reason. The storage media—pieces of sapphire measuring 2.5mm or larger—are both decorative and functional, locking away information that can be used to ensure product traceability and thwart forgers.  Arnano’s very first customers were from the luxury industry.

The company also plans to target data archiving applications. A single 1.5-mm-thick, 200-mm-diameter sapphire disc can hold the equivalent of 8,000 A4 or letter-sized pages of information—that’s the equivalent of a meter-high stack of paper.

Arnano is located on the MINATEC campus and leverages Léti patents and laboratory resources to manufacture its products. The company has signed on with four other partners for a Minalogic R&D project to develop a complete permanent data storage industry from data collection to retrieval. CEA Investissement holds a 15% stake in Arnano.
