The emergence of new technologies often forces us to take a closer look at important aspects of our society. This is particularly true of nanotechnologies. Public debate is crucial if we are to include in the new technology development process the diverse viewpoints of citizens, advocacy groups, designers, artists, researchers, ethics experts, governments, and other stakeholders.

MINATEC demonstrates a strong commitment to ensuring that this debate takes place by:

  • Holding events dedicated to these issues, like some of the “Science and Democracy” debates held by la Métro (the Greater Grenoble inter-municipal council) and academic conferences in the social sciences
  • Participating in the local debate, by having MINATEC researchers take part in roundtable discussions, forums, and other events organized by Grenoble’s Cultural, Scientific, and Technical Center (CCSTI)
  • Establishing, in 2009, a free lecture series (entitled “Les Transversales de MINATEC”) open to the general public to provide “alternative” viewpoints on MINATEC’s activities
  • Participating in several EU projects, including NanoPlat, designed to ensure that society’s needs are taken into account in nanosciences and nanotechnologies
  • Organizing public performances of stage productions developed by l’Atelier Arts Sciences.
