From MINATEC to GIANT

MINATEC takes part of GIANT (Grenoble Innovation for Advanced New Technologies). GIANT unites 10,000 researchers, 10,000 students and 10,000 industry professionals from around the world.

Global innovation campus GIANT expands on the MINATEC concept of bringing research centers, innovative businesses, and institutions of higher learning together on a single site. Some 30,000 innovation stakeholders already reap tangible benefits from their participation in GIANT, and the initiative will bring in more than €1 billion in investments.

The GIANT campus is larger than MINATEC in both size and scope. In addition to the micro and nanotechnology work carried out at MINATEC, GIANT also encompasses R&D in new energies (GREEN) and healthcare (NANOBIO). Grenoble Ecole de Management, a renowned business school specializing in innovation management, plays a key role in developing synergies between the three research pillars forming the GIANT campus.

GIANT also benefits from Grenoble’s legendary battery of large scientific research instruments: the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF); the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL); and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

The final component of the GIANT initiative is a far-reaching urban renewal plan (Grenoble Presqu’Ile) that will reshape the city’s Polygone Scientifique district, bringing in new housing, shops, and services. The area—sparsely populated today—is forecast to mushroom to 10,000 residents in the space of just a few years.
