Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) systems are test beds for quantum information science and, until recently, nearly all cavity QED experiments used a single atom in a high-quality-factor (high-Q) cavity. The advances of epitaxial growth of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), namely atom-like two-level solid-state systems, opened the way to QED studies in semiconductor cavities such as micro-pillar structures or photonic crystals.
