Discovering extreme optics

The Grenoble University (UJF) Doctoral School ran a selection of courses (under the aegis of the Collège de France Observational Astrophysics Chair) at the Grenoble Institute of Technology-Phelma on April 1 and 2. The program included interferometers and the substantially more accurate observation of stars; terrestrial and space hypertelescopes; and the detection and characterization of extrasolar planets.
The exceptional event was made possible by the close ties the local scientific community has built with Antoine Labeyrie, who currently holds the astrophysics chair. Grenoble researchers’ prowess in interferometry and micro and nanotechnologies also helped! In the great tradition of the prestigious Collège de France, the courses were free of charge and open to all, as has been the case since King Francis I!
