Doctoral schools reward involvement in science education

This year some fifteen PhD students from IBS, INAC, and IRTSV actively participated in MINATEC’s “Science Day” by manning booths, running workshops, and giving lab tours. The PhD volunteers were crucial to the success of the event, and their universities recognized their hard work by awarding them each one ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit. PhD students must earn a minimum number of ECTS credits before they can defend their theses; they can earn credits by attending scientific meetings, completing coursework, or participating in science education activities for the general public. This volunteer-for-credit system reflects the growing importance of science education and underscores the role that PhD students can play in raising public awareness of scientific issues.
