Léti and the Japan-based MicroMachine Center, which operates under the aegis of the Japanese Ministry of Industry, held their second joint technical seminar in Tokyo in early November 2009. The event let the two organizations—which signed an international cooperation agreement in late 2008—make concrete progress towards specifying the exact focus of their MEMS joint project. They have already started work on bioMEMS, using an approach that could eliminate the need for microfluidic canals and micropumps. And an engineer from Kyushu University has just arrived in Grenoble to work on organic LEDs. At the November seminar scientists identified two additional areas for cooperation: packaging and MEMS for robotics. This partnership will give Léti full access to MEMS research in Japan.
