A semiconductor and a superconductor all in one!
An INAC research team, working in conjunction with IFW in Dresden, Léti, and Institut Néel, has developed new semiconductor/superconductor hybrid components made from SiGe nanocrystals (80 nm base diameter and 20 nm high) obtained by epitaxy on SOI. Aluminum contacts were added to obtain quantum dot transistors whose low-temperature transport properties vary according to the contact resistance and can go up to a supercurrent resonance.
Several nanoelectric applications are being studied, and new physics phenomena are being explored. However a lot more work needs to be done to thoroughly understand this new technology, which was recently the subject of an article in Nature Nanotechnology magazine.
