Smart cards: VHDR speeds-up data transfer
Today’s contactless smart cards boast data transfer rates of up to 848 kbps. However, a technology called Very High Data Rate (VHDR), developed by Léti, Gemalto, and Grenoble-based SME Raisonance, has already boosted the rate to 6.78 Mbps—and will likely go much higher. The research partners won the “Sesame” best hardware award at Cartes 09, a leading global card industry event. They are currently working on obtaining ISO certification to be able to offer a complete package (physical layer, protocol layer, and testing) to high-volume markets. The technology could hit the market after a year of industrial development.
