A wind turbine on Avenue des Martyrs

A five-meter-high wind turbine was installed at Phelma’s Polygone campus, along Avenue des Martyrs, early this month. It was built by ten first-year Grenoble Institute of Technology-Phelma students as part of their group project (see issue 9 of MinaNews) and has some interesting features like a vertical axis, sails for blades, and a low-cost design that will make the wind turbine easier to market in developing countries.

The wind turbine is based on a patent filed by an engineer from Lyon. It has a nominal power output of 4 kW and can go up to 10 kW, but the recently-installed prototype will not produce electricity just yet—the students were not able to build a generator for the turbine themselves, so it will be built by another group next year.
